Guide for Uber drivers in Hawaii
How to file your G-45 on Hawaii Tax Online, step by step
Hawaii Tax Online is the State’s own site for filing and paying General Excise Tax, and filing on it is free. Here’s what each screen of the periodic return, Form G-45, asks an Uber driver, as the screens looked in October 2026. The annual G-49 is at the end.
Before you start
- Your GE license and its Hawaii Tax ID. No license yet? Get one first.
- Your figures for the period: your fares, and your tips and bonuses together. GETdone works them out from your Uber Tax Summaries.
- A bank account (routing and account number) if you’ll pay as you file. Debit payments are free.
- A logon. Go to hitax.hawaii.gov and sign in, or choose Create New Logon on the home page.
Once you’re signed in, the Accounts tab shows two accounts: General Excise for your G-45s and General Excise Reconciliation for your G-49s. The General Excise account shows your next return with a File Now link; earlier periods are under Periods and Returns.
The G-45, screen by screen
Each screen has Cancel, Save Draft, Previous and Next. Next won’t move on while a field has an error, and the site locks after 15 minutes without activity, so save a draft if you step away. Columns A, B and C are gross income, exemptions and taxable income, in whole dollars.
- Introduction. Nothing to enter. Nothing is filed until you press Submit on the last screen.
- Tax Districts. Tick your island’s district. To “Do you split your income for any of the following income sources?”, answer No: that’s for businesses that divide one payment with another business. Drive on more than one island? Then each island gets its own screens and a Form G-75, which GETdone doesn’t work out yet: email us.
- Excise Taxes (0.5%). Your fares go in column A of Wholesale Services. Column B is 0 unless you have exemptions; column C fills itself in.
- Excise Taxes (4%). Your tips (in the app and in cash) and Uber’s bonuses go in column A of Commissions.
- Insurance Commissions. Nothing for a driver.
- County Surcharge. The site fills in column A from the 4% screen. Nothing to type.
- Totals. Every figure is worked out for you: the 0.5% tax, the 4% tax, the surcharge and Total Taxes Due. Check them against your own.
- Penalty and Interest. Only on a late return with tax due. The site estimates both and asks whether to add them to the total; the Department may add more when it processes the return.
- Return Summary. The whole return on one page, for a last look.
- Confirm Submission. The declaration that the return is true and complete, and the bank-payment authorization. Type your full name in Signature: filing online is your signature. Then press Submit.
Which lines fares and tips go on comes from the Department of Taxation, by phone to GETdone on October 1, 2026; Tax Information Release 2025-01 sets the rates (fares at 0.5%, tips at 4% plus the county surcharge) but doesn’t name the lines.
Paying
When something is owed, you choose how to pay:
- Bank Account: a debit that takes 2 to 7 business days, free. A payment your bank refuses costs $25.
- Credit/Debit Card: on another company’s site, which adds a processing fee you don’t get back.
- Pay Later: file now and pay with Make a Payment on your account. Interest runs until it’s paid, and a return filed on time but unpaid 60 days after its due date adds a 20% penalty.
After you submit
You get a confirmation number. On the returns GETdone has seen filed, the site also emailed a confirmation from TaxDoNotReply@hawaii.gov, and another once the return was processed, by the end of the day; until then it could still be changed or removed under More, Search Submissions. Keep the confirmation number and the printable page of the return. In GETdone, record the return as filed with that number, and as paid once you’ve paid.
The G-49, once a year
From the General Excise Reconciliation account. The screens are much the same, with three differences: Tax Districts also asks whether payments were made for the year; the Totals screen is called Tax Summary and has three fields to type (any penalty and interest assessed on the year’s G-45s, and the total you paid with them); and there’s no Return Summary. The site then works out a refund or the tax still due. It’s due April 20, and filing it more than 12 months late can cost you the 0.5% rate. More on both forms.
Every figure, ready before you sign in
GETdone works out each return from your Uber Tax Summaries, free. With a pass, each return opens with the figure for every screen above, in order, with Copy buttons, so you can keep GETdone open beside Hawaii Tax Online.
