What it costs to file your Hawaii GET
A rideshare or delivery driver can file Hawaii’s General Excise Tax (GE tax) three ways: on your own, with a tax preparer, or with GETdone. Here’s what each costs, and the cost that’s often bigger: filing late.
General information from the Department of Taxation’s own pages, not advice for your situation. Check with a tax professional before you file.
The three ways
| Cost | Who does what | |
|---|---|---|
| On your own | Free to file on Hawaii Tax Online | You work out each line, rate and any penalty, and file it. |
| A tax preparer | About $200 to $585 a year* | They prepare the returns and file them for you. |
| GETdone | Free estimate. $99 for a tax year | It works out each line; you file it, step by step. |
*Fees published by Hawaii tax preparers in October 2026, for the two G-45s and the G-49 of a driver who files twice a year.
On your own: free
Filing Forms G-45 and G-49, and paying from your bank, is free on Hawaii Tax Online. The work is yours: fares and delivery pay go on Wholesale Services at 0.5%, tips and bonuses under Commissions at 4.5% (the rates), and a late return needs its penalty and interest. The form instructions say to work those out, or leave the lines blank and the Department bills you. Filing on Hawaii Tax Online, screen by screen.
A tax preparer: about $200 to $585 a year
Few Hawaii tax preparers publish their prices. Those that did in October 2026 charge $50 to $195 for each G-45 and $100 to $195 for a G-49, and one adds a $25 fee for each filing. Filing twice a year, that’s two G-45s and a G-49: about $200 to $585 a year. None publishes a price for catching up a past year, so expect about the same again for each year, plus any bookkeeping to put it together. A preparer files the returns for you, and can answer questions about your situation.
Income tax apps don’t do GET
Apps for your income tax return list only Hawaii’s income tax forms, not the G-45 or G-49, and the State’s list of approved software is for income tax returns. The GET is filed on its own, on Hawaii Tax Online. The GET you pay can be deducted as a business expense on your income tax return, the Department’s GET brochure says.
GETdone: free to start, $99 a tax year
- Free Estimate: your GET for every year you drove, with any late penalty and interest. No account, no card.
- On Track, $99 once: every G-45 and G-49 of one tax year, line by line, with each step to file it on Hawaii Tax Online. Nothing renews.
- Caught Up, $299 once: this year and every year before it. $200 if you already have On Track.
GETdone isn’t a tax professional and doesn’t file or pay for you: you file each return yourself, and can check it with a professional first.
The bigger cost: filing late
- Filed late: 5% of the tax for each month or part of a month, up to 25%.
- Interest: 2/3 of 1% a month on unpaid tax and penalties.
- The 0.5% rate: a G-49 filed more than 12 months after its due date can cost you the lower rate (section 237-9.3, Hawaii Revised Statutes), and fares would be taxed at 4.5%, nine times as much.
On a year of driving, those can add up to more than any of the prices above. More on the returns and their due dates.
